The Overview

In light of the recent downturn in New York City's economy, Get Canned will offer an entertaining and charitable networking event for those affected. This event is open to everyone, from downsized professionals and potential employers to those new to the job market. Get Canned also welcomes those with fantastic, secure jobs to come mingle, enjoy and support The Food Bank For New York City.

Being laid off, or 'getting canned,' rarely has a positive side to it, but Get Canned embraces the theme - collecting canned goods in place of a cover charge, offering canned beers and gourmet hors d'oeuvres made from traditional canned foods, and sending guests home with eco-friendly gift bags with various goodies, such as pink slips.

Guests at Get Canned will have access to entertainment, social networking, career support for the unemployed, and potential applicants for the employer.

The Numbers Speak for Themselves...

According to the weekly Chelsea Now, "In a comprehensive survey on the subject released last week, the New York City Coalition Against Hunger found that across the five boroughs, emergency food programs are serving an average of 28 percent more people than a year ago."

The Food Bank For New York City has released its figures for 2007, reporting that "the number of NYC residents who experienced difficulty affording needed food throughout the year has steadily increased every year, from 2 million in 2003 to 3.1 million in 2007 — a 55 percent increase. Those who would not be able to afford needed food immediately after the loss of their household income has increased from approximately 1.3 million in 2003 to approximately 1.6 million in 2007 — a 23 percent increase."

Since those figures are nearly one year old, the situation has surely gotten worse. By attending Get Canned, you are helping us to address this deficit. Thanks for doing your part to support your fellow New Yorkers in need!

No Guests Will Go Home Empty Handed

Whole Foods has agreed to support Get Canned by donating A Better Bag TM, which we will use as gift bags and fill with various goodies from event sponsors. As we get closer to the event date, we will post a complete listing of the contents of the gift bags. Here's more bag information from Whole Foods:

Form following function or vice versa, these reusable bags are perfect for shopping or as gift bags for the holidays and look great!

Top 10 reasons to Bag the Wrap and use "A Better Bag" instead
  1. Americans throw away 25% more trash between Thanksgiving and New Year's.
  2. A Better Bag is made of 80% post-consumer recycled PET bottles, saving them from going into the trash.
  3. In the U.S. alone, about 100 billion plastic bags are thrown away each year (and only 0.6 % of them are recycled).
  4. Extra waste during the holidays amounts to 25 million tons of garbage.
  5. Using A Better Bag can save millions of single-use bags (and wrapping paper!) from going to the landfill.
  6. It's a great-looking, cool, eco-friendly way to wrap gifts.
  7. A Better Bag can be used and re-used thousands of times.
  8. Whole Foods Market and recording artist Sheryl Crow teamed up to create a custom design for A Better Bag to benefit the Natural Resources Defense Council.
  9. If every family wrapped just 3 presents in re-used materials, it would save enough paper to cover 45,000 football fields.
  10. Double the giving: It's actually a gift that holds another gift which gives and gives again, and says you care even more!
